Mitsugu Mouryou’s Anime Review

Princess Resurrection was actually a spontaneous viewing choice for me, but turned out to be a good one. I must admit right off the bat, that the writing could use some help. From the get go our protagonist, Lillianne von Phoenix, is clandestinely referred to as Mistress(lady of the house, not that kind), Hime, or Princess Hime. This just seems redundant to me… (for all those who don’t speak Japanese or aren’t complete Otakus, Hime means Princess ) Plus what’s wrong with the name Lillianne? I must agree with the jerk Zeverin, it truly is a lovely name.
All the members of the royal family are in fact 'von Phoenixes' but they never use, or even mention their last names. Nomenclatural abnormalities aside, I did enjoy this series over all.

The plot: At first on paper, you’ll feel you seen this before… Several siblings with unearthly powers, fighting to the death over the throne of the Monster Realm, but with few interesting quarks that make this tale unique. The story is unique in that the royal siblings create half immortal soldiers/servants to do their bidding while they fight each other to the death till there is only one left.
There is the usual anime cliché of the male protag, Hiro, a pathetic wimp with a big heart, and several female leads harbor warm feelings for him.
The music is where this series shines, at least for all my fellow audiophiles. The opening theme could be better, and the interstitial musical cues are kind of predictable. I just really appreciate the background music, it’s not exceptionally well written, but the fact that you’ll hear such a wide variety of instruments. Violins, full size pipe organ, piano, brass, and most notably, the marimba(wooden xylophone from Africa)! Where else, not just in anime, can you actually hear a marimba??? I enjoy music and this series has some very creative choices with some very predictable pipe organ musical cues.
Voice acting isn’t that bad… the script supervisor went a little further than most when it comes to creative liberties in the EN vers, but over all it was done quite well. However, I do have one major complaint to register: a flute is not a whistle! In the EN vers of ep 19 'Princes Ocean', Liza hears a “whistle” and as the episode progresses everyone also uses the term whistle, but once you see the little mermaid in the flesh, she is in fact playing a bloody flute. Just like in the original JP vers. How hard is it to just say flute for continuity purposes? The mouth movement aren't that dissimilar. Moving on…
Character design: For a series with monsters, vampires, werewolves, ghosts, mermen, shark people, nekos, normal humans, and animal humanoids, the char designs are rather tip top. They did a god job in both the anime, and what I’ve briefly seen of the manga. I just have a curiosity: Liza, though half werewolf, in one ep she is doing her daily sit-up routine and counting to the 1800’s, while in another ep she’s doing 2500+ pushups… She is faaaaaaaaar too skinny, and untone to handle such a regiment. I guess it’s just the werewolf blood.
Character development is a catch 22 as a whole. As some characters develop a rich history, others show just how shallow they are. The werewolf race seems to be very Klingon in nature. They announce their names prior to battle and have a proud family heritage. Lillianne(Hime) and her family have a bit of a history that is only touched on briefly with no overall conclusions. Other chars like the wimpy Hiro, who doesn’t evolve much; his elder sister, who has got to be the dumbest character in the history of anime; and the monophonetic androids, with little to no back story; don’t really change all that much through the course of the story.
In conclusion: The plot ends with only one sibling's path completed, no explanations of the animosity between vampires and werewolves, no conformations as to which royal sibling sent Lobo Wildman after Lillianne, and several other questions are left up in the air. A concrete setup for a sequel, but there is only a 3 ep OVA I have yet to see, to avoid cross char contamination, yet will be working on right away. So, all that, I did enjoy this horror comedy, that was light on the horror, and thusly will give it a firm 6.2 (out of 10). Princess Resurrection contains a wee bit of blood, medium violence, no nudity, nor much of a foul word, recommended viewing, and good for background noise.
